Mariah Carey is mourning the loss of her mother and sister, who, according to the singer, died "on the same day."

In a statement to CNN on Monday, Carey said, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

The causes of death for Patricia Carey and Alison Carey have not been disclosed. Patricia Carey was reportedly 87 years old, while Alison Carey, a resident of Coxsackie, New York, was 63, as noted in a Times Union article.

Carey expressed gratitude for the time she spent with her mother before her passing, saying, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia Carey was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. She was married to Mariah Carey’s father, Alfred Roy, until their separation when Carey was three years old. Alfred Roy passed away in 2002.

In her 2020 memoir, *The Meaning of Mariah Carey*, the singer discussed their "complicated" relationship, acknowledging, “like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.” Despite their challenges, Carey dedicated part of her book to her mother, stating, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Mariah Carey and her sister Alison had a strained relationship, with Alison suing Mariah in 2021 for emotional distress caused by content in Carey’s memoir. The lawsuit alleged that Carey’s book was intended to “humiliate and embarrass” her sister. Mariah Carey did not file a response to the lawsuit.

Carey has one other sibling, Morgan Carey, alongside Alison.
